Transition Year

Transition Year (TY) at St Vincent’s Secondary School is an exciting, one-year educational experience taken after the Junior Certificate. This optional programme provides students with a unique opportunity to grow personally, socially and academically before progressing to the Leaving Certificate.

Purpose of TY

Transition Year is designed to help students:

  • Develop greater maturity, independence and self-confidence.
  • Build key life skills such as time management, teamwork, self-directed learning and communication.
  • Explore new subject areas and career paths.
  • Make more informed choices for Leaving Certificate subjects and future study.

Curriculum and Learning

The TY curriculum at St Vincent’s is broad and varied, combining academic subjects with experiential learning and personal development. While core subjects continue, students also engage in a wide range of activities that support creativity, critical thinking and skills for life beyond the classroom.

Activities and Experiences

Students participate in many enriching experiences throughout the year, including:

Work Experience placements

  • University ‘Taster’ Programmes (e.g., with UCC/CIT)
  • Project work and subject-related competitions (BT Young Scientist, Rubbish Film Festival)
  • Mini-company and enterprise initiatives
  • Barista Course
  • Film-making and creative media
  • Choir, dance, drama and arts activities
  • School Musical
  • Ballyhass trip and school tour/foreign trip
  • Involvement in national programmes such as the President’s Award (Gaisce)

Assessment and Reporting

Assessment in TY moves beyond traditional exams and includes ongoing evaluation through project work, portfolios, presentations and participation. This approach encourages students to reflect on their learning and personal growth throughout the year.

Benefits of TY

By completing Transition Year, students often enter the Leaving Certificate programme with increased motivation, a clearer sense of purpose and stronger study skills. Research shows that students who take TY can achieve higher results in their Leaving Certificate exams, partly due to the maturity and confidence developed during the year.
